The José Limón Dance Foundation will host a memorial for longtime Limón Dance Company Artistic Director Carla Maxwell on Sunday, March 8, at 7 p.m. at the Joyce Theater, 175 Eighth Avenue. Admission is free.
Maxwell (1946–2025) led the company for nearly 40 years, serving as Artistic Director from 1978 to 2015. She joined the Limón Dance Company in 1965, quickly becoming a principal dancer under founder José Limón. She originated roles in Dances for Isadora, Carlota, and the iconic ‘Emilia’ in The Moor’s Pavane. Maxwell was appointed Associate Artistic Director in 1975 and assumed leadership in 1978. Her accolades include a 1988 Dance Magazine Award and receiving the National Medal of Arts on behalf of the Limón Foundation in 2008.
The memorial will feature archival footage of Maxwell’s performances at Juilliard and excerpts of her most celebrated roles. Speakers include Limón Dance Company Artistic Director Dante Puleio, Associate Artistic Director Logan Frances Kruger, family members Omar and Vanessa Guerrero, and longtime colleagues from the Limón family. The program will also include live performances of Limón works There is a Time and Missa Brevis, Maxwell’s Sonata and Etude, and Murray Louis’ Figura.
“Carla poured her heart and soul into the Limón legacy and gave so much—if not all—of herself to the field, the Company, and everyone who passed through it,” said Puleio.
In 2026, the company will launch the Carla Maxwell Legacy Fund to support dancer development, leadership, and wellness initiatives, ensuring the continued growth of the Limón Dance Company and the modern dance field.
