The Louis Armstrong House Museum opened a new exhibition titled Armstrong in Ghana at the Louis Armstrong Center in Queens on Oct. 1, 2026. The year-long, limited engagement exhibition explores the global jazz icon navigating cultural and political complexities as he toured his music through Africa in the 1950s and 1960s.
Curated by Executive Director Regina Bain, the exhibit utilizes artifacts, recordings, photographs, and documents from the 60,000-piece Armstrong Archive that cover his tour through the Gold Coast as it transitioned into an independent Ghana. These archival items are displayed alongside existing artwork by Kaloki Nyamai, Aaron Douglas, and John Biggers, as well as new commissioned works by artists Stephen Towns and Rita Mawuena Benissan.
The exhibition schedule includes live musical and dance performances by Chief Adjuah, Keweku Sumbry, The Ghana Jazz Collective, Latasha Barnes, and Edmund Boateng Akrofi. Additional programming features panel talks, workshops, listening sessions of Armstrong’s 1956 Accra Opera House concert recording, artist discussions, and historical presentations on the African roots of jazz.
Visitors can access ticketing details and schedule information through the museum website. Following its run at the Louis Armstrong Center in New York, the exhibition is scheduled to travel internationally to the Nubuke Foundation in Accra, Ghana, in fall 2027.
The Louis Armstrong House Museum consists of a three-building campus in Corona, Queens, which includes Armstrong’s historic home, the Armstrong Center, and Selma’s Place. The institution presents guided tours, community initiatives, and the Armstrong Now residency program, which provides research access to the archives for contemporary artists.
