Union Square will debut its first evening public art installation this winter as Boston-based MASARY Studios presents Patterned Behavior, an interactive light and sound experience in the park’s Pavilion and North Plaza. The installation, part of the Union Square Partnership’s “Bright Nights Out” program, runs from Jan. 16 through Feb. 17 and will be viewable nightly from 4 to 10 p.m.
The installation transforms pedestrian movement into dynamic patterns of light and sound, using infrared sensors to track activity and create an evolving audiovisual display. The work is intended to showcase the rhythms of the neighborhood while encouraging visitors to interact with the space in new ways.
“Patterned Behavior invites the public to see and hear how their presence shapes the spirit of Union Square—a living canvas of light, sound, and motion,” said Ryan Edwards, co-founder of MASARY Studios. Julie Stein, executive director of the Union Square Partnership, called it “a must-see evening destination” complemented by special local business deals through the Bright Nights Out program.
The installation is supported by the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation and the Department of Small Business Services Public Realm Grant. Participating Union Square businesses offer discounts and promotions, including complimentary drinks, pastries, and tickets to theater and dance events, to encourage visitors to explore the neighborhood after dark.
MASARY Studios, founded in 2015, has created immersive installations in cities including Boston, Denver, Mexico City, and Austin. This project marks the collective’s largest New York City work to date. For more information, visit unionsquarenyc.org.
