MoMA PS1 will become New York City’s largest free museum beginning Jan. 1, 2026, offering free admission to all visitors for the next three years as the institution celebrates its 50th anniversary.
The expanded free-admission program is made possible by a gift from creative entrepreneur Sonya Yu and removes financial barriers to entry for both New Yorkers and visitors from around the world. Previously focused on free access for city residents, the initiative will now extend to all audiences, making PS1 the city’s largest museum with universal free entry.
“For fifty years, MoMA PS1 has made the work of living artists relevant and accessible,” said Connie Butler, the Agnes Gund Director of MoMA PS1. “I am deeply grateful for Sonya Yu’s transformative support, which will make free access to our oasis for contemporary art and culture here in Queens possible for all.”
The free-admission program will launch alongside the museum’s anniversary year and includes access to signature exhibitions and programming, including Greater New York, which opens April 16, 2026. Visitors will also receive free entry to the full slate of 50th-anniversary exhibitions and events throughout the year.
Yu said her gift reflects a belief in the role of the arts in fostering community and inclusion.
“I have always believed that building authentic creative communities is a powerful force for social change,” Yu said. “As a proud Chinese immigrant and a mother, I’ve seen firsthand how access to art can directly shape imagination and change perspectives.”
The initiative builds on MoMA PS1’s recent efforts to expand accessibility, including multilingual resources in English, Spanish and Chinese, free event tickets for Long Island City residents, and strengthened partnerships with local community organizations.
Founded in 1976, MoMA PS1 is dedicated to supporting living artists and contemporary art practices. The new free-admission model underscores the museum’s mission to broaden access and invite wider public engagement as it enters its next 50 years.
