The Museum at Eldridge Street will host its 25th annual Egg Rolls, Egg Creams & Empanadas Street Festival on Sunday, June 21, from 12 to 4 p.m., celebrating the diverse cultural heritage of the Lower East Side and Chinatown. The free, family-friendly event will take place on Eldridge Street between Division and Canal Streets, with food available for purchase.
The festival, first launched in 2001, honors Jewish, Chinese, and Puerto Rican communities that have long shaped the neighborhood. What began as a small gathering for 500 attendees has grown into a major New York City summer event, drawing more than 13,000 visitors annually since 2021. In 2020, the festival moved online, attracting 27,000 digital participants worldwide.
Highlights of the 2026 festival will include freshly made egg creams and egg rolls, klezmer music, bomba and Chinese lion dancing, face painting, Puerto Rican Vejigantes paper mache masks, Chinese paper cutting and folding, Mahjong, and arts and crafts for children. A full schedule will be posted on the museum’s website in advance of the event.
“The Egg Rolls, Egg Creams & Empanadas Festival celebrates traditions that bind generations together through community resilience and creative expression,” said a museum spokesperson. “It’s a vibrant reflection of the Lower East Side’s rich cultural fabric.”
The festival is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Museum Travel Alliance, Council Member Christopher Marte, Valley Bank, and the Jewish Community Youth Foundation.
The museum, housed in the 1887 Eldridge Street Synagogue, is a National Historic Landmark and the first great house of worship built in America by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Exhibits and programs explore Jewish immigrant life, architecture, and cultural continuity, welcoming visitors of all backgrounds.
