The Museum of Arts and Design (2 Columbus Cir, New York, NY 10019) will open a major mid-career survey of the work of Nikolai and Simon Haas on April 11, marking the New York debut of the traveling exhibition “Haas Brothers: Uncanny Valley.”
The exhibition features approximately 85 works spanning 15 years of the twin brothers’ collaborative practice. Organized by the Cranbrook Art Museum, the collection includes zoomorphic sculptures, algorithmically generated landscapes, and hand-built ceramics that challenge traditional boundaries between fine art, digital technology, and functional design.
“The Haas Brothers embody everything MAD stands for: fearless experimentation, material mastery, and an expansive vision of what craft can be today,” said Tim Rodgers, the museum’s Nanette L. Laitman Director.
Among the highlights of the survey are the artists’ “Beasts” series, which are fur-covered sculptural forms, and the “Endless Paintings,” which utilize early computer graphics-inspired algorithms. The exhibition also highlights the duo’s commitment to community-driven craft, such as the “Freaks” series created in partnership with beadwork artisans from South Africa and California.
Founded in Los Angeles in 2010, the Haas Brothers studio has become known for its “problem-solving fantasies”—a process that merges meticulous handcraft with digital code. Their work is currently held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
“In Uncanny Valley, visitors encounter objects and environments that feel simultaneously ancient and futuristic,” said Elissa Auther, the museum’s deputy director of curatorial affairs.
The New York presentation is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts. A 256-page monograph published by Phaidon’s Monacelli Press accompanies the exhibition.
“Uncanny Valley” will remain on view at the Museum of Arts and Design through August 16 before continuing its national tour to the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Texas, and The Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina.
