The Museum of Arts and Design (2 Columbus Cir, New York, NY 10019) will present Porcelain Florilegium, a major exhibition of Alice Riehl’s large-scale porcelain murals, from Feb. 28 through Oct. 12, 2026. The installation marks the first major U.S. museum presentation of Riehl’s work, highlighting the artist’s exploration of plant life in urban environments.
The exhibition features four monumental wall murals—Timidité (2025), Dent-de-Lion (2024), Songe (2024) and Alter Ego (2022)—inspired by botanical imagery from medieval and Renaissance tapestries, French decorative arts, mythology, and close observation of plant life. Riehl’s work treats plants as active subjects, emphasizing root systems, growth cycles, and the resilience of species that thrive in challenging city landscapes.
Elissa Auther, MAD’s deputy director of curatorial affairs, said Riehl “expands the legacy of porcelain beyond ornament, positioning it as a medium for ecological reflection and cultural critique.”
Dent-de-Lion highlights underground root systems, challenging cultural hierarchies between weeds and valued species. Songe draws on passionflowers, classical mythology, Shakespeare, and feminist art history to explore authorship and memory. Alter Ego, created during the COVID-19 lockdown, examines duality, vulnerability and regeneration through the banyan tree, while Timidité reflects on New York City’s verticality and the tension between architecture and organic life.
The exhibition also includes process materials, dried flora, sketches, and video documentation from Riehl’s 2025 Villa Albertine residency in New York City. Visitors will be invited to share reflections on plants significant to their lives, deepening engagement with the ecological themes of the show.
Porcelain Florilegium coincides with a concurrent exhibition by Riehl at the Musée de la Toile de Jouy in France, running March 27 through May 24, 2026.
