The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company will mark the Lunar New Year with a special performance celebrating the Year of the Horse on Feb. 1 at 3 p.m. at the Colden Auditorium at Kupferberg Center for the Arts, 153-49 Reeves Ave. Tickets are $22, with discounts available for students, seniors and Queens College students.
The internationally touring company, founded by Chinese American choreographer Nai-Ni Chen and now led by Artistic Director Greta Campo and Executive Director Andy Chiang, will present a program blending traditional Chinese culture with contemporary dance.
The performance includes:
- Lion in the City – Choreographed by Peiju Chien-Pott with Hip Hop legends Kwikstep and Rokafella, combining traditional lion dance with hip-hop elements.
- Reverberation of Joy – Choreographed by Zhongmei Li, featuring music by Angel Lam.
- Mongolian Harvest – Choreographed by Lawrence Jin, inspired by the nomadic Mongolian way of life and the Naadam Festival.
- Carousel – An abstract work by Nai-Ni Chen inspired by the motion of carousels and the grace of horses.
- Festival (Dragon Dance) – A traditional folk dance representing prosperity, good luck and harmony, featuring a colorful dragon descending to bless the earth.
The performance is designed as a family-friendly celebration, showcasing the expressive power of movement, cultural storytelling and the visual spectacle of traditional Chinese dance forms.
Tickets are available online, and the performance aims to immerse audiences in the spirit of the Lunar New Year through a fusion of ancient traditions and contemporary artistry.
