New York Historical to present audio exhibition on Holocaust survivors’ voices

The New York Historical will present The Recordings: Voices from the Shoah Tapes, a powerful audio exhibition drawn from the archives of Claude Lanzmann’s landmark 1985 Holocaust documentary Shoah. The exhibition opens Nov. 28, 2025, and runs through March 29, 2026.

The installation, organized in partnership with the Jewish Museum Berlin, features selections from 152 previously unknown cassette tapes recorded in the 1970s, including interviews with survivors, perpetrators, and bystanders. The recordings provide rare insight into the research process behind Shoah, preserving personal testimonies in their original form.

“Hearing the voices and personal stories of those who survived the Holocaust will, we hope, provide a vital history lesson to a new generation,” said Dr. Louise Mirrer, president and CEO of The New York Historical. “In the context of rising antisemitism today, The Recordings offers a powerful example of how quickly the perspective that Jewish people and their faith are to be superseded can seep into a nation’s political consciousness, then drive violence on the world stage.”

The audio archive, donated to the Jewish Museum Berlin in 2021 by the Association Claude et Felix Lanzmann, was designated part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 2023. The exhibition is curated by Tamar Lewinsky of the JMB and coordinated for The New York Historical by Valerie Paley, Sue Ann Weinberg, and Keren Ben-Horin.
