Patsy’s Pizzeria, (23 Lexington Avenue (at 23rd Street), the iconic Harlem coal-oven pizzeria credited with inventing the New York slice, has opened a downtown Manhattan location inside the Freehand New York, just steps from Gramercy Park.
The new 96-seat restaurant, developed in partnership with Promise Hospitality Group, offers a modern reimagining of the nearly century-old Harlem institution. Executive Chef Pietro Aletto, formerly of Loreto Italian Kitchen & Bar and Feroce at the Moxy Chelsea, helms the kitchen. The menu features Patsy’s signature pizzas, including Classic New York, Margherita, Hot Soppressata, and White Truffle pies, as well as pasta and seafood dishes such as Mezzi Rigatoni alla Cacciatore and Whole Butterflied Branzino.
The beverage program, curated by David Choi, includes cocktails highlighting traditional Italian ingredients, including the Pomodoro Americano, Pepperoni Martini, My Way Bellini, and Amaretto Affogato.
Founded in East Harlem in 1933 by Pasquale “Patsy” Lancieri and his wife Carmella, Patsy’s Pizzeria has a storied history, hosting Frank Sinatra and inspiring the cast of The Godfather. The restaurant was passed to longtime collaborator Frank Brija in 1991 and now aims to bring its legacy to a downtown audience.
Located within Freehand New York, the space blends restored architecture with contemporary design, featuring marble flooring, neon signage, and green-tufted upholstery, echoing the original Patsy’s visual identity. The partnership with Promise Hospitality plans to expand the reimagined concept to other markets nationwide.
