Seven-time Grammy® Award-winning composer and saxophonist Paul Winter will release his new album, Horn of Plenty, on November 21, 2025, just in time for Thanksgiving. The project brings together Winter’s signature soprano saxophone sound with the Paul Winter Consort and a diverse array of guest artists from Brazil, Russia, Ireland, Romania, and Armenia, alongside the natural voices of dolphins, wood thrushes, blue whales, and timber wolves.
The album’s concert premiere will take place on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City — the Consort’s first-ever Thanksgiving celebration at the historic venue.
A Cornucopia of Sound
The inspiration for Horn of Plenty emerged from a request by NPR to create a radio program celebrating Thanksgiving. Drawing on the holiday’s traditional symbol, the cornucopia, Winter developed the idea of a “horn of plenty” — a musical offering celebrating Earth’s abundance. When the “Horn of Plenty” radio hour aired on Thanksgiving Day 2024, Winter was moved to expand the project into a full-length album.
“I actually aspire to produce a voice on saxophone that is similar to that of a French horn,” Winter explains. “I feel a deep sense of gratitude to my horn for how it has been a kind of ‘magic carpet,’ carrying me to a lifetime of adventures around the world. Horn of Plenty presents my horn in a diversity of settings, in celebration of the cornucopia of creatures and cultures of our glorious Earth.”
A Tribute to a Mentor
The album is dedicated to Roger Payne (1936–2023), Winter’s longtime friend and mentor best known for bringing the songs of the humpback whales to the world. In one of his final interviews, Payne said, “If, in our listening, we fall in love with whales, then we fall in love with nature and fall in love with the whole world.” Winter and the Consort honor that legacy with a new composition titled “Song to Roger.”
Musical Highlights
Horn of Plenty features an eclectic mix of compositions inspired by Winter’s decades-long global journey:
- “Harvest Faire” reflects his fascination with Bulgarian and Balkan rhythms.
- “Primavera (Spring)” revisits Winter’s early connection with Brazilian composer Carlos Lyra and guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves, whom he met during a 1962 Latin American tour.
- Three pieces showcase what Winter calls “the greater symphony of the Earth,” integrating natural voices from the realms of ocean (Dolphin), air (Wood Thrush), and land (Wolf).
- The album also includes a new interpretation of Ralph Towner’s “Icarus,” the Consort’s beloved theme song for over fifty years.
With Horn of Plenty, Paul Winter continues his lifelong mission to blend music, nature, and spirit — crafting what he describes as “a cornucopia of gratitude for the living world.”
