The 92nd Street Y (92NY) presents acclaimed guitarist Sean Shibe in a live, acoustic-electric performance at Buttenwieser Hall, The Arnhold Center, 1395 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10128, at 7:30 PM. In-person tickets start at $45, with livestream access available for $25. Online streaming will be available for 72 hours following the concert.
Shibe, recognized as one of the most original voices on the guitar, will perform a program that spans both classical and electric guitar. The first half of the evening features works for classical guitar, including transcriptions of J.S. Bach’s cello suites. The second half explores contemporary repertoire on electric guitar, including the New York premieres of Thomas Adès’ Forgotten Dances and Pulitzer Prize-winning Tyshawn Sorey’s For Bill Frissell, as well as Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint performed against a pre-recorded track.
Commissioned by Wigmore Hall, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Britten Pears Arts, Vancouver Recital Society, and 92NY, Sorey’s work showcases Shibe’s commitment to expanding the guitar repertoire and collaborating with living composers. This performance is part of the Marshall Weinberg Classical Music Season at 92NY.
Shibe’s 2025/26 season highlights include his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra under Thomas Adès, a residency at the Southbank Centre with the Philharmonia Orchestra led by Marin Alsop, a residency at Porto’s Casa da Música, and premieres of works by Tyshawn Sorey, Poul Ruders, Carola Bauckholt, and Ben Nobuto.
Known for his versatility, Shibe has collaborated with orchestras including The Hallé, BBC Scottish Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic, and Royal Northern Sinfonia, as well as artists such as Marina Abramović, Adam Walker, and Allan Clayton. His recordings, including Profesión (2024 BBC Music Magazine Award) and Lost & Found (OPUS Klassik 2023), have earned international acclaim, and his album Broken Branches was Grammy-nominated in 2024.
Shibe studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Kunst-Universität Graz, and in Italy under Paolo Pegoraro, and currently teaches guitar at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
