Guitarist Sharon Isbin, a multiple Grammy Award-winner and celebrated pioneer of her instrument, will perform at the 92nd Street Y on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at Kaufmann Concert Hall, 1395 Lexington Avenue. Tickets start at $45 for in-person attendance and $25 for the livestream.
The program will feature works written for Isbin by composers Tan Dun and Bruce MacCombie, as well as classical guitar favorites by Enrique Granados, Francisco Tárrega, and Agustín Barrios Mangoré. Central to the evening is John Duarte’s Joan Baez Suite, inspired by the folk singer’s songs, including Where Have All the Flowers Gone and House of the Rising Sun. The suite appears on Isbin’s Grammy-winning album Journey to the New World.
“Sharon’s exquisite playing allowed me to revisit and fall in love with these songs all over again,” Baez said of the work.
Isbin has been instrumental in shaping the guitar’s legacy over the past four decades. She was the first guitarist named Musical America’s Instrumentalist of the Year in 2020 and has received numerous awards including the 2023 Guitar Foundation of America Hall of Fame and Artistic Achievement Award. She has performed with more than 200 orchestras worldwide and appeared in venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the White House.
Her extensive discography includes over 40 albums, highlighting premieres of works written specifically for her by John Corigliano, Christopher Rouse, Tan Dun, and Aaron Jay Kernis, among others. She directs the guitar departments at The Juilliard School and Aspen Music Festival.
The 92nd Street Y presentation is part of the Marshall Weinberg Classical Music Season and promises a program that combines virtuosity, innovation, and a broad repertoire for classical guitar enthusiasts.
Program includes
- Enrique Granados: Danza española No. 5 (Andaluza)
- Francisco Tárrega: Capricho árabe
