The South Street Seaport Museum will host an interactive afternoon exploring New York City’s athletic history with the event “Gold, Metals and Grit: Secrets and Lies” on March 29 at 3 p.m. at 213 Water Street. Tickets are $15.
The program, presented in collaboration with Double or Nothing Media, celebrates the spirit of the Winter Olympics and the city’s competitive traditions. Attendees will hear firsthand accounts from renowned photojournalist Arlene Schulman, who documented New York City boxing, and Gina Antoniello, academic director at New York University’s Tisch Institute for Global Sport, who will discuss breaking gender barriers and shaping professional sports communications.
Following the talks, Christa Avampato, creator of “Secrets and Lies,” and public historian Alexa Rast will engage in a playful “one-up” challenge, sharing true stories from the city’s sports history—except for one fabricated tale. Attendees can test their knowledge to identify the lie and win prizes.
The event includes light refreshments and drinks. Preregistration is recommended, but walk-ups will be accommodated as space allows.
Tickets do not include general admission to the museum’s historic ships and exhibitions, which are available Friday through Sunday. General admission provides access to the 1885 tall ship Wavertree, the 1908 lightship Ambrose, and all current exhibitions in the Schermerhorn Row galleries.
Founded in 1967, the South Street Seaport Museum preserves and interprets New York City’s maritime and cultural history through exhibitions, historic vessels, print shops, and educational programming.
Tickets and more information are available at seaportmuseum.org.
