Families looking for a hands-on winter activity can head to the South Street Seaport Museum (12 Fulton St, New York, NY 10038) this month for its February Monthly Family Activity, Build a Baggywrinkle, running through March 1.

The free, all-ages program invites visitors to learn about baggywrinkle, a traditional maritime tool made to protect sails from wear and tear aboard ships. Participants will see an authentic example from one of the museum’s historic vessels before creating their own version using colorful yarn.

The activity takes place indoors at 14 Fulton St. on select dates in February and March, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., making it an easy addition to a visit to the Seaport Museum galleries, the tall ship Wavertree, or the lightship Ambrose.

Throughout February, the craft offers a seasonal twist, with materials that can be turned into a maritime-inspired Valentine’s Day decoration, though visitors are encouraged to choose any colors they like.

Upcoming dates to build a baggywrinkle include Feb. 13–15, 20–22 and 27–28, with a final session on March 1. Free tickets are required and can be reserved in advance through the South Street Seaport Museum.
