South Street Seaport Museum Offers Hybrid Sea Chanteys Event

The South Street Seaport Museum (12 Fulton St, New York, NY 10038) will host its monthly sea chantey sing in a hybrid format on Sunday, March 1, from 2 to 4 p.m., inviting participants to join in person at 12 Fulton Street or online via Zoom. The event is free, but preregistration is encouraged.

The program celebrates traditional maritime music, from work songs to ballads, filling the Museum’s Schermerhorn Row galleries with the rhythms of seafaring life. Attendees may sing along, lead a tune, or simply enjoy the performance. Those registering to lead a song are asked to provide the song title in advance.

“Sea chanteys fit in beautifully with the New York tradition,” said Laura Norwitz, the Museum’s senior director of program and education. “Sailing ships were a melting pot of languages and cultures, and singing onboard helped sailors build community. Today, our chantey sings celebrate both maritime heritage and the community we create through shared music.”

General admission tickets are available separately for visitors wishing to explore the Museum’s historic ships, including the 1885 tall ship Wavertree, the 1908 lightship Ambrose, and other exhibitions. More information and registration are available at seaportmuseum.org.
