South Street Seaport Museum will host its final hybrid Sea Chanteys and Maritime Music program of the season on April 5 from 2 to 4 p.m., inviting participants to join either in person at 12 Fulton St. or online via Zoom.
The free event brings together a community of music lovers to celebrate centuries-old seafaring traditions through group singing. Attendees can participate by leading songs, singing along, or simply listening as the museum’s Schermerhorn Row galleries fill with traditional maritime work songs and ballads.
Organizers say the April session marks the last opportunity to experience the chantey sing in a hybrid format before it transitions to in-person-only gatherings aboard the historic 1885 tall ship Wavertree from May through November.
Preregistration is encouraged for in-person attendance, though walk-ups will be accommodated as space allows. Advance registration is required for Zoom participants, with limited opportunities available for those wishing to lead songs virtually.
Sea chanteys, once sung by sailors to coordinate labor and boost morale during long voyages, remain a key part of maritime heritage. “When we sing these songs today, we celebrate our connection with our maritime heritage and also with the community we create,” said Laura Norwitz, the museum’s senior director of program and education.
The South Street Seaport Museum, founded in 1967, preserves and interprets New York City’s history as a major port through exhibitions, educational programming, and its collection of historic vessels, including the lightship Ambrose.
