The South Street Seaport Museum will celebrate Holi with a full day of free programming, performances, and family activities on March 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The event, Holi at the Seaport Museum, offers free general admission across the museum’s campus and Seaport Square, featuring dance and drum performances, food experiences, an outdoor Indian market, and the traditional throwing of colorful powders.

Festivities begin at noon in Seaport Square with dance performances and an interactive workshop set to popular Holi songs, accompanied by traditional dhol beats from Dholi Amrit. DJ Magic Mike will continue the celebration with a mix of Holi favorites throughout the afternoon.

From noon to 2 p.m., visitors can participate in Holi Powder Play countdowns held every half hour beneath the masts of the 1885 tall ship Wavertree and the 1908 lightship Lightship Ambrose at Pier 16. For safety and preservation reasons, only powdered colors purchased from Kulture Khazana will be permitted; outside powders are not allowed. Colors may be purchased at the event or pre-ordered online through March 6.

An outdoor Indian market featuring nearly a dozen Indian-owned businesses will be set up at Pier 16, and visitors can sample Holi-inspired flavors in Seaport Square from noon to 3 p.m.

Family-friendly activities continue aboard the Wavertree at 2 p.m. with a Kids Holi Celebration, including a puppet show presented by WonderSpark Puppets and The Culture Tree, as well as a reading of “Kahaani Rangeeli (Colorful Story)” by author Anu Sehgal. Hands-on activities and photo opportunities aboard the historic ship will also be offered. Separate registration is required for ship access due to limited capacity.

Holi, which originated on the Indian subcontinent, marks the arrival of spring and is widely recognized as a festival celebrating renewal, inclusivity, and joy through the playful throwing of colored powders.

Admission to the event includes access to the museum’s historic ships and exhibitions, including galleries at 12 Fulton St. and the Maritime City exhibition at 213 Water St. Museum officials note that guests covered in colored pigment will not be permitted inside exhibition spaces to protect the collection and historic buildings.

While tickets are free, preregistration is encouraged. Walk-up visitors will be accommodated as space allows.
