The South Street Seaport Museum (12 Fulton St, New York, NY 10038) will welcome the Lunar New Year with a free, family-friendly celebration on Sunday, Feb. 15, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering visitors a full day of performances and hands-on activities.
The event marks one of the city’s earliest Lunar New Year festivities of the season and celebrates the Year of the Horse. General admission to the museum will be free throughout the day.
Highlights include multiple lion dance performances, beginning at 2 p.m. aboard the historic 1885 tall ship Wavertree. The dancers will then parade along Fulton Street, passing the museum’s Schermerhorn Row galleries, before a second performance at 2:30 p.m. in front of Bowne & Co., Stationers, and the A.A. Thomson & Co. exhibition galleries on Water Street. A family photo opportunity with the lion dancers is scheduled for 3 p.m.
From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., visitors of all ages are invited to participate in a maritime-inspired craft activity, creating their own Chinese Lion Chain decorations using colorful paper links modeled after nautical signal flags.
Access to the performances and activities is included with free museum admission. Tickets are free, though preregistration is encouraged, with walk-up attendance accommodated as space allows. Click here to register.
