The South Street Seaport Museum will host a book launch for Julian Sancton’s new work, Neptune’s Fortune: The Billion-Dollar Shipwreck and the Ghosts of the Spanish Empire, on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 2:30 p.m. at 213 Water Street. Admission is free.
Sancton’s latest book tells the story of the Spanish galleon San José, which sank off the coast of Colombia carrying more than $1 billion in gold and silver, and chronicles Roger Dooley’s decades-long quest to locate the wreck. The presentation will feature behind-the-scenes stories, photographs, and readings from the book, followed by a moderated discussion with the award-winning author.
The program also explores Spanish colonial history, naval warfare, treasure hunting, diving technology, Cuban-American relations, and the ethical challenges of excavating historic sites. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event through Scattered Books, which can also provide copies by mail for those unable to attend.
Julian Sancton is a New York Times bestselling author and senior features editor at The Hollywood Reporter. His work has appeared in Vanity Fair, National Geographic, Esquire, The New Yorker, and GQ. He lives in Larchmont, New York.
