The South Street Seaport Museum will kick off the new year with a hybrid sea chantey and maritime music sing on Jan. 4, inviting participants to join either in person or online.
The free program runs from 2 to 4 p.m. Eastern and will take place at the museum’s galleries at 12 Fulton St., with a simultaneous option to participate via Zoom. The event is part of the museum’s long-running chantey sing series, held on the first Sunday of every month and presented in a hybrid format throughout the cooler months.
The sessions will continue through April 2026, bringing together a community of singers and listeners dedicated to preserving centuries-old seafaring work songs and ballads. Participants are encouraged to sing along, lead a tune or simply listen as traditional maritime music fills the gallery.
Preregistration is encouraged for in-person attendance, though walk-ins will be accommodated as space allows. Anyone attending in person may lead a song during the round-robin format, and those wishing to do so are asked to provide the song title when registering. Advance registration is required for Zoom participants, with a limited number of online attendees able to lead songs due to capacity restrictions.
All registrants will receive a Zoom link in their confirmation email, regardless of whether they choose in-person or online attendance, allowing flexibility for those who may change plans.
Museum admission to historic ships and exhibition galleries is not included with the event. Admission tickets provide access to the 1885 tall ship Wavertree, the 1908 lightship Ambrose at Pier 16, and multiple exhibitions across the Seaport Museum campus.
Sea chanteys were traditionally sung by sailors during long voyages as a way to coordinate work, pass time and maintain morale. The South Street Seaport Museum continues that tradition by bringing people together through shared music.
“Sea chanteys fit in beautifully with the New York tradition,” said Laura Norwitz, the museum’s senior director of program and education. “When we sing these songs today—some old, and some updated with up-to-the-moment lyrics—we celebrate our connection with our maritime heritage and also with the community we create by enjoying home-made music together.”
