The Apollo relit its iconic marquee and vertical blade sign on June 10, marking the first public milestone in the institution’s ongoing restoration and modernization project. The ceremony took place along 125th Street in Harlem, drawing local community members, artists, and government officials. The project represents the largest renovation effort in the theater’s history since it first became The Apollo in 1934.

In tandem with the lighting event, the institution posthumously inducted Kiki Shepard into its Walk of Fame. Shepard served as the longtime co-host of the television series Showtime at the Apollo. The dedication ceremony featured remarks from Apollo Historian Billy Mitchell, family members, representatives from the KIS Foundation, and a musical performance by the vocal ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock.

Media personality Bevy Smith hosted the outdoor event, which commenced with a musical procession down 125th Street by the New York City-based drumline Marching Cobras. The program featured remarks from Apollo President and CEO Michelle Ebanks, Board Real Estate Chair Dawanna Williams, and Vice Chair Pat Zollar. Attendees included Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal, State Senator Cordell Cleare, Assemblymember Jordan Wright, and City Council Member Yusef Salaam.

The updated marquee structure includes enhanced infrastructure intended to support future interdisciplinary and technologically expansive artistic works. The broader physical restoration of the theater facility originally began construction in 2025 under the direction of Consigli Construction Company. The venue is executing the project in distinct phases, with early reopening steps anticipated in late 2026 followed by a full public opening in the spring of 2027.

The celebration also featured performances by Greginald Spencer and original spoken word poetry from amateur night alumnus Mariah Rae. Originally illuminated in 1934, the marquee remains a prominent symbol of the Harlem community and American cultural history. The venue will utilize the modernized space to expand its upcoming artistic initiatives and youth programs.
