The Frick Collection will present the first exhibition focused on Siena as a center for bronze sculpture during the Italian Renaissance starting this fall. Titled Siena: The Art of Bronze, 1450–1500, the presentation brings together nearly 40 works created by artists including Donatello, Vecchietta, and Francesco di Giorgio.

The exhibition features statues, reliefs, candelabra, and medals, many of which have never been displayed outside of Tuscany or in the United States. The collection explores the technical and political challenges Sienese bronzeworkers faced while showcasing the medium’s versatility.

Organized by Frick Associate Curator Giulio Dalvit, the show incorporates loans from Italian institutions such as the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte in Naples, and the Museo Civico in Siena. Additional participating lenders include the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the British Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

“Between 1450 and 1500, almost nowhere in Italy did local artistic traditions rely so heavily on a single medium as Siena’s did on bronze,” Dalvit said. “Uniting some forty masterworks for the first time in one location, this exhibition highlights the revelatory achievements of Sienese artists, which constitute nothing short of a golden age of bronze sculpture.”

The exhibition will be accompanied by a 400-page hardcover catalogue published by The Frick Collection in association with Paul Holberton Publishing. The volume includes essays, object entries, new photography, archival documents, and scientific analysis coordinated by Frick Associate Conservator Victoria Schussler.
