The Frick Collection (1 E 70th St, New York, NY 10021) will present Ruffles & Ribbons: Fashion Plates from the Time of Marie Antoinette from April 1 through Aug. 3, 2026, in the museum’s Cabinet Gallery.
The installation will feature 24 hand-colored engravings depicting French dress in the late 18th century, marking the first gallery presentation drawn entirely from the holdings of the Frick Art Research Library.
Organized in conjunction with the special exhibition Gainsborough: The Fashion of Portraiture, which opens Feb. 12, the display highlights selections from the library’s rare set of Gallerie des modes et costumes français (1778–87). The publication was the largest and most influential fashion plate series of its time.
The engravings offer insight into clothing and accessories during the reign of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, capturing the elaborate silhouettes, textiles, and ornamentation that defined French style in the years before the French Revolution. The designs circulated widely and helped shape fashion beyond France, influencing trends seen in contemporaneous British portraiture, including works by Thomas Gainsborough.
By pairing the Cabinet Gallery installation with Gainsborough: The Fashion of Portraiture, the Frick aims to provide visitors with a broader context for understanding how printed fashion imagery informed elite dress and artistic representation in the late 18th century.
Ruffles & Ribbons will be on view April 1 through Aug. 3, 2026.
