The Public Theater has announced the complete cast for the world premiere of “Girl, Interrupted,” a new play with music based on the bestselling memoir by Susanna Kaysen.
The production, written by Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok, features music by two-time Grammy Award winner Aimee Mann and choreography by Tony Award winner Sonya Tayeh. Performances are scheduled to begin May 13 in the Martinson Hall at Astor Place, with an official opening night set for June 4.
Juliana Canfield, a Tony Award nominee for “Stereophonic,” will star as Susanna. She is joined by vocalist and songwriter King Princess, who makes her stage debut in the role of Lisa. The ensemble cast includes Emily Skinner, Ta’Rea Campbell, Gabi Campo, and Manoel Felciano.
Directed by Tony nominee Jo Bonney, the stage adaptation explores Kaysen’s time in a psychiatric hospital in the late 1960s. The narrative focuses on the unexpected bonds formed between young women navigating mental health struggles and the search for interpersonal connection.
The production features songs from Mann’s 2021 album, “Queens of the Summer Hotel,” which was composed specifically for this adaptation. Todd Almond provides orchestrations and serves as music supervisor.
In conjunction with the premiere, the National Alliance on Mental Illness of New York City (NAMI-NYC) will partner with The Public to provide support resources. Maggie G. Mortali, CEO of NAMI-NYC, is scheduled to participate in a post-performance talkback in June.
The limited engagement is scheduled to run through June 21. Following The Public’s tradition, the run will begin with a Joseph Papp Free Performance on May 13, with tickets distributed via a digital lottery.
The world premiere arrives during a busy spring season for The Public, which is currently staging Anna Ziegler’s “Antigone” and the world premiere of “Public Charge.”
