Tyler the Creator and Olivia Rodrigo rock the 2025 Governors Ball

The energy at the 2025 Governors Ball was absolutely electric—a three-day explosion of sound and joy at Flushing Meadows–Corona Park in Queens. After dodging the logistical headaches and fickle weather of Governors Island, Randall’s Island, and even Citi Field, the festival finally found its groove in this sprawling green oasis. It now offers better stage spacing, and smoother entry. Although Saturday’s storm did delay the festivals start for a few hours, it had little impact on the festival as a whole.
My top highlight? Tyler, the Creator on Friday night—blazing through his latest opus Chromakopia and throwing it back to the raw grit of Goblin’s “Yonkers.” To witness his evolution from eccentric provocateur to multifaceted creative was a monumental musical moment.
But Gov Ball also doubled as a family celebration. Nothing beat watching parents groove with their kids during Conan Gray’s set—a tear-jerkingly sweet moment that drove home how this fest embraces every generation.
The food lineup fueled the fun—with standout grub like beef empanadas from Empanada Papa, perfect for powering through setlists. And the festival’s genre carousel—from Feid’s reggaetón to Olivia Rodrigo’s pop-rock—laid bare its all-inclusive ethos.
Another standout: Mk.Gee, the guitar maestro from New Jersey, delivered a spine-tingling set from Two Stars & The Dream Police that had the crowd buzzing with newfound excitement.

In VIP, the vibe was surprisingly chill—ample seating, social spots, and VIP perks felt downright luxurious. Brand activations? On fire. Nerds dished out wacky photo ops and temporary tattoos, while Hennessy hosted a lively lounge for dancing and drinks.
And then came Young Miko—Puerto Rican, LGBTQ+, full of fire—who paused mid-show to celebrate Pride Month. Her explosion of energy scored her an emotional win and one of the weekend’s most authentic moments.
The standout of the weekend? Olivia Rodrigo absolutely owned Saturday night. The crowd surged in unison as she kicked off a high-voltage set—complete with pyros, runway ramps, and rock-star energy—redeeming Gov Ball’s headliner legacy.
And then—a surprise for the ages. Music legend David Byrne joined her onstage for a duet of Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House.” Byrne, in red overalls, Rodrigo in sparkly red, danced and riffed through verses, trading powerful vocals and cheeky moves—wrapping in a warm shared embrace that brought the crowd to its knees. The audience erupted—from teenagers to longtime fans—as they jumped and cheered, utterly captivated.

Rodrigo closed her set with fan favorites “Deja Vu,” “Brutal,” “Good 4 U,” “All-American B––,” and “Get Him Back.” The Saturday crowd swelled to capacity—the peak moment of the fest .
The 2025 Governors Ball was a testament to growth—just like its artists. The move away from Governors Island was a practical, brilliant shift that let the festival elevate its choreography, scope, and emotional impact. From Tyler’s evolution and Mk.Gee’s breakout vibes to family dance-offs and Young Miko’s Pride celebration, every moment rang with connection. Yet it was Rodrigo’s surprise duet with David Byrne—two generations colliding in bliss—that truly set the weekend ablaze.
Gov Ball has transformed into not just a music festival, but a communal moment—diverse, daring, and unforgettable. If you have the opportunity and means, make sure you catch it in 2026.
