Vangeline Theater and the New York Butoh Institute are offering subsidized rehearsal space for $10 per hour, thanks to support from the New York State Council on the Arts.
Located at 126 10th Street, Suite 207, in Gowanus, the column-free studio is fully equipped with full-length mirrors, a portable barre, sound system, new Rosco Marley floors, WiFi, heat and air conditioning, a silent air purifier, and access to a private bathroom. Natural light, daily cleaning, and flexible scheduling make the space available for a wide range of rehearsals and creative work.
Vangeline, artistic director of the institute, is known for her work in Japanese Butoh, blending traditional dance with contemporary relevance and social activism. She founded the New York Butoh Institute Festival and Queer Butoh, programs that amplify the work of women and LGBTQ+ artists, and runs The Dream a Dream Project, which brings Butoh to incarcerated individuals across New York State.
Her international career includes performances and choreography presented in countries including Germany, Italy, the U.K., Mexico, and Taiwan, and she has received numerous awards, including a 2022 National Endowment for the Arts Dance Award. Vangeline has also taught at institutions such as Princeton, NYU, and Duke, and her work has been widely praised by publications including The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times.
