The professional choral ensemble Voices of Ascension will present a program of Renaissance music spanning more than two centuries on April 23 at Church of the Ascension.
Titled “Masters of the Renaissance: The Netherlands School,” the concert will feature works by influential composers including Josquin des Prez, Rolande de Lassus, and Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck.
The program traces the evolution of choral music from the early Renaissance through the transition into the Baroque period, highlighting motets and psalms that are rarely performed today. Selections include Josquin’s “Ave Maria,” Lassus’ “Ave Verum Corpus,” and Sweelinck’s French Huguenot psalms.
Led by artistic director and conductor Dennis Keene, the ensemble aims to bring historical works to contemporary audiences through performances rooted in both scholarship and artistic expression.
Founded in 1990, Voices of Ascension has built an international reputation for its choral performances and recordings, earning praise from publications including The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.
Organizers said the April concert reflects the group’s ongoing commitment to presenting both well-known and lesser-heard works from the choral canon.
The April 23 performance is part of the ensemble’s current season, which will conclude May 21 with a program blending contemporary and historical repertoire.
