Works & Process will present a preview performance of Windfall, a new play by Academy Award–winning writer Tarell Alvin McCraney, on Monday, Feb. 9, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the Peter B. Lewis Theater inside the Guggenheim Museum (1071 5th Ave, New York, NY 10128).
The evening features Steppenwolf Theatre Company offering audiences an early look at the work ahead of its world premiere in Chicago this April as part of Steppenwolf’s 50th anniversary season. Tickets start at $25.
Windfall explores the intersection of grief, justice and power through the lens of money. The story centers on a father whose child is killed in a confrontation with police. He is soon approached by three strangers who urge him to accept a financial settlement, leave the city and move on — or remain where he is, surrounded by memories and economic hardship. McCraney’s play examines how questions of sexuality, gender, history and even pride are reshaped when financial survival becomes the central issue.
The Works & Process program will include excerpts from the play along with behind-the-scenes insight into McCraney’s creative process. Best known for his Academy Award–winning screenplay for Moonlight, McCraney is a longtime ensemble member of Steppenwolf Theatre Company and one of the most influential voices in contemporary American theater.
Steppenwolf, founded in 1976, is widely regarded as one of the nation’s premier ensemble theaters, with a history of groundbreaking productions including August: Osage County, The Grapes of Wrath and The Brother/Sister Plays. The Chicago-based company has earned 14 Tony Awards, two Pulitzer Prize-winning commissions and the National Medal of Arts, and continues to shape the national theater landscape through bold new work and extensive education programs.
The Guggenheim event offers New York audiences a rare opportunity to encounter Windfall in its early stages, setting the stage for what promises to be one of the most closely watched new plays of the coming season.
