The World Music Institute and Flamenco Festival New York will present a tribute concert honoring legendary flamenco guitarist Sabicas on March 14 at The Town Hall in Manhattan.
The performance, scheduled for 8 p.m. with doors opening at 7 p.m., will close the 25th anniversary of Flamenco Festival New York. Tickets range from $35 to $95.
The concert pays homage to Sabicas, born Agustín Castellón Campos, who is credited with elevating the flamenco guitar to a solo concert instrument. In 1959, Sabicas made history at The Town Hall by presenting the first solo flamenco guitar recital there, shifting the instrument from its traditional role accompanying song and dance to center stage.
The tribute will feature three generations of flamenco guitarists: Gerardo Núñez, Latin Grammy Award-winning Antonio Rey, and rising artist Álvaro Martinete. Dancer Olga Pericet will join the lineup, evoking the legacy of Carmen Amaya, Sabicas’s longtime artistic collaborator.
Born in Pamplona, Spain, in 1912, Sabicas fled to New York in the early 1940s during the Spanish Civil War. He remained in the city for four decades, recording extensively and building an international reputation. At a time when Spain was under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, New York offered Sabicas creative freedom and access to global audiences.
During his years in the United States, Sabicas became a central figure in the flamenco community, welcoming and mentoring generations of dancers, singers, and guitarists arriving in America. His presence helped establish New York as a significant hub for flamenco outside Spain.
The March 14 performance aims to celebrate that legacy and the enduring influence of Sabicas on the evolution of flamenco guitar.
