The new original musical comedy The King’s Critique will make its world premiere in Manhattan this fall for a limited engagement. Performances are scheduled to begin Tuesday, November 3, ahead of an official opening night on Thursday, November 12, at The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center.
Featuring music and lyrics by Nat Zegree and a book and lyrics by Eric Holmes, the production is directed by Catie Davis. The storyline centers on King Benjamin, who issues a royal decree forbidding women from performing onstage, prompting a character named Josephine to devise a plan with a tenor named Sebastian to challenge the rule.
The cast features Taylor Iman Jones, Justin Collette, Donna Lynne Champlin, Matthew Patrick Quinn, Gabi Carrubba, Gilbert L. Bailey II, Bridget Beirne, Nick Cearley, Christian Fary, Timothy Matthew Flores, Amy Jo Jackson, Geena Quintos, and Justin Sudderth. Understudies for the company include Kyrie Courter and Ryan Everett Wood.
The show is produced by Meg Fofonoff for Art Lab Productions and Jordan Fisher for Jordan Fisher Theatrics, alongside Anthony Salamon, Ashton Clay, Courtney Peraza, and executive producer Lisa Dozier Shacket. Writers Zegree and Holmes first began collaborating on the concept while attending Indiana University, and a five-song concept album was previously released on streaming platforms in 2025 by Joy Machine Records.
The creative team includes choreographer Nancy Renee Braun, scenic designer Paul Tate dePoo III, costume designer Emily Rebholz, lighting designer Cory Pattak, and sound designer Jessica Paz. Additional design and direction support includes movement director Lorenzo Pisoni, orchestrators Nat Zegree and Ian Chan, and music director Nat Zegree.
