Works & Process will present a first look at “In the Folds of Her Purple,” a new interdisciplinary work by Martha Graham Dance Company principal dancer Xin Ying, on April 26 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1071 5th Ave, New York, NY 10128).
The 7 p.m. program at the Peter B. Lewis Theater features excerpts from the work, which uses modern technology to reinterpret Martha Graham’s iconic 1930 solo, “Lamentation.” Developed in partnership with Onassis ONX and PS21: Center for Contemporary Performance, the project explores the intersection of dance, digital archiving, and responsive media.
The performance is structured in three parts, beginning with a solo by Janet Eilber that transforms the traditional purple fabric tube of the original dance into a series of projected media environments.
The second segment features dancer Lloyd Knight in a solo set to music by Myles Potters, performing alongside volumetric imagery created by Alan Winslow. The presentation concludes with a contemporary duet by Amanda Moreira and Jai Perez, featuring an interactive video installation titled “Time Mirror V” by David Wallace Haskins.
“Xin Ying reimagines Martha Graham’s iconic solo through a series of experimental media environments,” according to the production’s organizers.
The evening will include a moderated discussion with Ying and the creative team to discuss the integration of dance and emerging technologies. Media and lighting design for the production is provided by Timothy Kelly.
The work received development support through residency programs at Onassis ONX and PS21 in 2025. Tickets for the Guggenheim preview start at $25. Click here to purchase tickets.
