The South Street Seaport Museum has announced a new family-friendly monthly activity for May titled “Impressive Impressions,” which explores the historical connection between the maritime district and the printing industry. The program will be held at 14 Fulton St. and is included with the cost of general admission.
The hands-on activity is inspired by the woodblock printing tools and illustrations currently featured in the museum’s three-floor exhibition, Maritime City. Visitors will have the opportunity to create their own illustrative “woodcuts” using styrofoam and produce impression prints that mimic traditional block printing techniques.
Participants can design original illustrations or use templates provided by the museum. Before beginning the craft, the museum encourages guests to visit the Maritime City exhibition and Bowne & Co. Stationers to view historical printing equipment, including a functional printing press and professional examples of the craft.
“Impressive Impressions” is designed for participants ages 5 and up. The activity will be offered every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from May 1 through May 31, between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Tickets for the museum and the family activity can be reserved through the South Street Seaport Museum’s official website.
