Gingold Theatrical Group announced today the cast for a special reading of Maurine Watkins’ original 1926 play “Chicago,” continuing the 21st season of the Project Shaw series.
The performance, scheduled for Monday, May 18, at 7 p.m. at The Players Club, features Tony Award winner Nikki M. James as Roxie Hart and Reg Rogers as Billy Flynn. The production is directed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge.
While most modern audiences are familiar with the 1975 Kander and Ebb musical adaptation, Gingold Artistic Director David Staller noted that Watkins’ original script offers a sharper edge.
“This 1926 play is actually far more overtly political, sardonic, and sexual than the musical adaptation,” Staller said.
The cast also features Katerina McCrimmon as Velma Kelly, David Ryan Smith as Amos Hart, and Tony Award winner Randy Graff as Mary Sunshine. Jackie Hoffman joins the ensemble as Mrs. Morton, alongside Arnie Burton, Richard B. Watson, Daniel Jenkins, Troy Iwata, and Erin Maguire.
Watkins wrote the satirical comedy based on real-life murder cases she covered as a journalist in Chicago. The play serves as a critique of media sensationalism and the legal system, following two women who use celebrity status to navigate their murder trials.
Tickets for the reading are currently on sale through Eventbrite. The Gingold Theatrical Group, founded in 2006, dedicates its programming to the work and humanitarian ideals of George Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries.
