The 92NY Harkness Dance Center will conclude its 2025/26 “Women Move the World” mainstage series with the New York premiere of An Evening with Aszure Barton on Thursday, May 21, at 7 p.m.
Held at the Geffen Stage at Kaufmann Concert Hall, the event serves as an intimate portrait of Barton’s creative practice. The performance features a collection of solos, duets, and ensembles, including the U.S. premiere of human undoing and the New York premiere of LubDub, a new work created with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago set to music by JLIN.
“Aszure Barton is among the most sought-after choreographers of her generation — a singular voice whose work has stirred audiences around the world,” the center stated. Barton, who founded the multidisciplinary hub Aszure Barton & Artists (AB&A) in New York in the early 2000s, describes her collective as “a mobile home for trusted humans.”
The evening features a collaborative roster of performers, including longtime AB&A collaborators Jonathan Alsberry, Tobin Del Cuore, James Gregg, and Taylor LaBruzzo. They are joined by independent artists Rena Butler, MJ Edwards, Jennifer Florentino, and Isaac Hernández of American Ballet Theatre, alongside dancers from Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Gauthier Dance | Theaterhaus Stuttgart, and Limón Dance Company.
The program marks a homecoming for Barton, who spent nearly 20 formative years in New York. Her career spans collaborations with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Misty Copeland, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and the Martha Graham Dance Company. She also choreographed the Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera and recently premiered Mere Mortals at San Francisco Ballet, the first evening-length work by a female choreographer in that company’s history.
Barton is a recipient of the Arts & Letters Award and serves as an official ambassador of contemporary dance in Canada. She is currently an Artist in Residence at both Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Gauthier Dance | Theaterhaus Stuttgart.
Tickets for the event start at $45 and are available through the 92NY website. The series is supported by the Harkness Foundation for Dance, the Arnhold Foundation, and the New York Community Trust, among other donors. Click here to purchase tickets. Click here to purchase tickets.
