The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company has announced a cross-cultural program at The CitiGroup Theatre on May 15-16, 2026, in celebration of Asian American Heritage Month.
The concert series serves as a tribute to the company’s history and future, featuring the revival of Nai-Ni Chen’s “Du,” the contemporary work “Flowing Stream under the Moon Light,” and the world premiere of Peter Chu’s “Reflections of a Ripple.”
Performances are scheduled for Friday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 16, at 3:00 p.m. at The CitiGroup Theatre, located at 405 W. 55th St. A VIP reception will follow the Saturday afternoon performance, allowing the audience to meet the artists, designers, and choreographers.
The program highlights include:
- “Reflection of A Ripple” (Premiere): An exploration of movement lineage and cultural heritage by Peter Chu.
- “Du”: A work influenced by Chinese Buddhism featuring measured movements.
- “Flowing Stream under the Moon Light”: A piece by Ying Shi depicting youthful purity by a moonlit riverside.
- “Way of Fire”: A choreography for five women highlighting female resilience.
- “Incense”: A work inspired by temple rituals where dancers embody rising clouds.
The company, led by Artistic Director Greta Campo, features dancers Sarah Botero, Yuchin “Kiki” Tseng, Madeleine Lee, Madelyn Sarver, Lorenzo Guerrini, Caleb Baker, Kathryn Taylor, Esteban Santamaria, Rio Kikuchi, and Candace Jarvis.
Nai-Ni Chen (1959-2021) was a prolific choreographer who built a repertoire of over 80 original works. Her style blended Chinese cultural traditions with the spirit of modern dance. Her contributions to the immigrant cultural experience have been honored by the International Institute and OCA.
The 2026 season is supported by organizations including the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. Tickets are available through the company’s website at nainichen.org/events.
