Abingdon Theatre Company has announced its newest short film, Parachutes & Paper Planes, as part of its Pride Month initiatives. The project is directed by Pierre Marais with a concept and choreography by Matthew Couvillon.
Set during World War II, the film follows a secret connection that develops between a parachute rigger and a fighter pilot. The narrative unfolds through choreography that explores the tension between military duty and personal intimacy during wartime. The film stars Cory Betts and Carlos Falú.
The project is produced by Couvillon, Chad Austin, and the Abingdon Theatre Company. Before its public premiere, the film will screen on the film festival circuit. It has already secured official selections at the Malta Dance Film Festival and Interfaccia Digitale.
“At its core, this film is about endurance—of love, of identity, and of the human spirit in a world built to suppress it,” director Pierre Marais said.
Abingdon Theatre Company was established over 33 years ago to develop and produce new American work by emerging and established artists. The company expanded into film production in 2020 with the launch of Abingdon Virtual, which previously produced the award-winning film As Apple Pie, as well as It Cries Too Loudly, Apart, and Ghost Light.
The theater company’s past Off-Broadway productions include Maybe Tomorrow, Robin & Me: My Little Spark of Madness, and Queens Girl in the World. Its One Night Only Series has also developed projects such as Alex Edelman’s Just for Us.
