The Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company has announced the return of its interactive preview series, In the Studio, taking place at New York City Center Studios this fall. Free public events are scheduled for Saturday, September 12 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, October 11 at 2 p.m.
The upcoming studio sessions build on two preview programs hosted in June 2026. Designed to demystify concert dance, the informal gatherings allow audiences to view rehearsals, speak directly with company dancers, and engage in open discussions with choreographer Daniel Gwirtzman regarding the creative process.
All tickets for the two studio sessions are free to the public with advance reservation. The events serve as a lead-in to the company’s 2026 New York City performance season and its first full evening-length production in the city since 2019.
The company will premiere the new work, Friction, at the Ailey Citigroup Theater on October 29 and 30 at 7 p.m., with a final performance on October 31 at 3 p.m. General admission tickets are priced at $38, with $26 discounted tickets available for students and children under 12.
Friction examines themes surrounding artificial intelligence, human relationships, and societal tension. The production features a full musical score generated in collaboration with the large language model Claude, incorporating additional software programs to synthesize voice tracks reflecting digital data flows.
The evening-length piece incorporates Flashpoint, an ensemble work developed at the American Dance Festival in 2024 that explores intimacy, harmony, and conflict. The program also features Large Language Model, a group section incorporating recontextualized excerpts from the company’s past repertory executed at rapid speeds.
The performance roster features dancers Mariah Anton Arters, Derek Crescenti, Sarah Hillmon, Vanessa Martínez de Baños, Johnny Mathews, Aria Roach, and Daniel Gwirtzman. The production team includes costume designer Deb Sivigny and lighting designer Bryan Ealey.
