The Limón Dance Company will continue celebrating its 80-year history with a performance series at The Joyce Theater in Manhattan from October 6 through October 11, 2026. This run features foundational work by founder José Limón alongside newer contemporary pieces. Performances are scheduled for Tuesday through Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.
Tickets for the engagement at 175 Eighth Avenue start at $17 including fees, and a special curtain chat is scheduled for October 7. The upcoming program highlights six years of leadership under Artistic Director Dante Puleio, who took charge of the company in 2020. Puleio’s programming pairs reconstructions of legacy choreography with newly commissioned contemporary works.
The lineup features the historical reconstruction of José Limón’s 1958 piece, Mazurkas. Limón created the work following a post-World War II trip to Poland to honor the resilience and vitality of the Polish people. Set to ten pieces by composer Frédéric Chopin, the dance will be performed in its entirety with live piano accompaniment for the first time since 1964.
The program will conclude with Join, a 2025 commission choreographed by Aszure Barton in collaboration with composer Ambrose Akinmusire. Barton used Limón’s written descriptions of a lost Doris Humphrey work, Orestes, as the creative inspiration for the piece. The production features detailed partnering and costume designs by Canadian fashion designer Rémi van Bochove.
The creation of Join was commissioned by The Friends of Perry-Mansfield and The 92nd Street Y as part of an anniversary celebration. The piece serves as the final installment of three distinct choreographic commissions focused entirely on female choreographers.
