The New York Butoh Institute will present a four-part Noguchi Taiso class series led by instructor Melissa Lohman. The weekly sessions will take place on Mondays—August 10, 17, 24, and 31—from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 115 Wooster Street in Manhattan.
Noguchi Taiso is a Japanese body release practice developed by Michizo Noguchi that focuses on fluidity, relaxation, and responsiveness to gravity. Used by Butoh dancers as a foundational training method to build movement awareness, the classes are open to beginners, with admission set at $25 per session.
Lohman is a New York City native currently based in Rome, Italy, working as a performer, choreographer, teacher, and visual artist. She earned a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2000 and has created site-specific performance installations across international galleries, museums, and unconventional venues.
The series is presented at the Vangeline Theater, home of the New York Butoh Institute. Led by artistic director Vangeline, the institute specializes in Japanese Butoh through research, performance, and community programs, including the New York Butoh Institute Festival and Queer Butoh.
Funding for the class series is provided by the New York State Council on the Arts, with support from the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature, alongside the New York Department of Cultural Affairs and the City Council. Registration details and additional information are available through the organization’s website.
