The national tour of The Hip Hop Nutcracker will stop at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn on December 23. Directed, choreographed, and co-created by Emmy winner Jennifer Weber, the production offers a contemporary, hip-hop adaptation of Tchaikovsky’s 130-year-old ballet score.
Hip-hop pioneer Kurtis Blow serves as the special guest MC for the Brooklyn performance. Blow, known for recordings such as Christmas Rappin’ and The Breaks, was the first rapper signed to a major label and the first hip-hop artist to tour globally.
The family-friendly production features an all-star cast of dancers, breakers, an on-stage DJ, and an electric violinist. The story follows Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince on a dream adventure as they battle a gang of mice and visit the land of sweets.
Innovative digital graffiti and visuals transform the setting of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s original story from 19th-century Germany to contemporary New York City. Co-created in 2013 by Weber and writer Mike Fitelson, the production is executive produced by four-time Tony winner Eva Price.
Tickets are on sale now for the December 23 show at Kings Theatre.
