South Street Seaport Museum to host free sea chantey sing on Nov. 1

The South Street Seaport Museum will host a free, in-person sea chantey and maritime music session on Sunday, Nov. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. It takes place at 213 Water St. in Lower Manhattan. Preregistration is encouraged, and walk-ups will be accommodated as possible.

A local artist hosts the session and leads the group through traditional maritime work songs and ballads. The program is a round-robin, so attendees of all skill levels can take the stage and sing a chantey of their choice. Guests with a song in mind can share the title when they register. Attendees can also sing along with the chorus or simply listen.

With colder weather approaching, the November program moves indoors to the first-floor galleries of the Maritime City exhibition in the museum’s A.A. Thomson & Co. warehouse. Access to the Maritime City exhibition is included with the event ticket.

Access to other exhibitions and the historic ships is not included. General Admission adds the 1885 tall ship Wavertree and the 1908 lightship Ambrose at Pier 16. It also includes both exhibitions on view in the first-floor Schermerhorn Row galleries at 12 Fulton St. The exhibition The Promise of Liberty: Words That Shaped a Nation has been extended through Nov. 29. Visitors can book General Admission tickets in advance or ask museum staff at check-in.

Sailors on long voyages spent months in close quarters with little entertainment and a monotonous routine. They kept their spirits up by singing together, with work songs, story songs, nonsense songs, and news of the day. The museum keeps the chantey tradition alive.

The South Street Seaport Museum was founded in 1967 and preserves and interprets the history of New York as a great port city. Its collection includes artworks, artifacts, a maritime reference library, working 19th century print shops and a fleet of historic vessels.
