The International Brazilian Opera Company will launch its second biennial Opera Nova: NYC concert season at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall on November 16, 2026, at 8 p.m. Presented in collaboration with Opera Ebony, the performance features works by seven living Brazilian opera composers, curated by IBOC Artistic Director João MacDowell.
The program presents select pieces from Brazil’s contemporary opera scene, with most works making their U.S. premiere. Featured composers span four generations, including Guggenheim Fellow Jocy de Oliveira, electronic music pioneer Jorge Antunes, prolific composer João Guilherme Ripper, Latin Grammy nominee Clarice Assad, and emerging talents Franciele Regina Lima and Sombrio da Silva.
Vocal soloists include soprano Kyaunnee Richardson, dramatic soprano Victoria A. Davis, mezzo-soprano Chantelle Grant, baritone Kevin Johnson, and tenor Nelson Ebo, with pianist Mireia Frutos Fernández accompanying the vocal works. The repertoire includes pieces from Assad’s The Selfish Giant, Antunes’s Imperatriz Leopoldina, Ripper’s Piedade, Lima’s Gota Tártara, da Silva’s Imperfect Decisions, de Oliveira’s Ouço Vozes Que Se Perdem Nas Veredas Que Encontrei, and MacDowell’s Tamanduá.
Tickets for the Carnegie Hall concert start at $45, plus an $11 service fee, and can be purchased directly through the venue. The 2026/2027 season will continue in January 2027 with a salon-style recital series on the second floor of Berimbau Restaurant, featuring a Brazilian cocktail and tasting menu alongside the music program.
The concert builds on a long-standing relationship between MacDowell and late Opera Ebony co-founder Benjamin Matthews, who first met in Rio de Janeiro in 2002. Supported by the Opera America/Howard Gilman Grant, the New York State Council on the Arts, Opera Ebony, Berimbau Restaurant, and the Federative Republic of Brazil, the initiative highlights ongoing cross-cultural artistic ties between Brazil and New York City.
