New musical chronicles history of former Hell’s Kitchen hospital

Animal Stone Productions has announced a limited workshop presentation of a new musical production titled Broke. The show is scheduled to run from September 14 through September 20 at Theatre 4 on Theatre Row, located at 410 West 42nd Street in Manhattan.

The production is inspired by the book BrokeDown Palace by Maggie Dubris, who also wrote the libretto and lyrics for the stage piece. The musical features a score composed by Andy Teirstein and direction and choreography by Guggenheim Fellowship recipient Seán Curran.

The narrative focuses on the history of St. Clare’s, a former hospital in Hell’s Kitchen that provided medical care to poor residents of New York City. The story bridges a century by following the interconnected lives of two women, starting with an Irish immigrant who founded the institution during the Great Depression.

The plot then transitions to a paramedic navigating the hospital’s ambulance through the AIDS crisis, the crack epidemic, and the events of September 11, 2001. The performance tracks the 20th-century trajectory of the facility up until its eventual demolition.

To represent the environment of the city, the production incorporates a mix of prose, movement, and a varied musical score. Teirstein composed the music utilizing driving Irish fiddle tunes, rhythmic drum patterns from Ghana and Cuba, and modern asymmetrical elements.

The production schedule includes a preview performance on September 18, followed by official show dates on September 19 and September 20. Additional details regarding the creative team and performance schedule are available through the producing company.
