South Korean pop star Ivy will join the Broadway cast of Chicago to portray the leading role of Roxie Hart for a limited three-week engagement. Her run in the production is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 17, and will conclude on Sunday, September 6.
The performances will take place at the Ambassador Theatre, located at 219 West 49th Street in Manhattan. Chicago is currently the longest-running musical playing on Broadway, as well as the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. Following her engagement in New York, Ivy is scheduled to return to Seoul, South Korea, to perform at the LG Arts Center Theatre starting Saturday, December 5.
Ivy, whose full name is Eun-Hye Park, has extensive experience across theater, television, and music. Her past South Korean musical theater credits include roles in Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Aida, Wicked, Ghost the Musical, and Jekyll & Hyde. Her career has been recognized with multiple accolades, including the Best Leading Actress honor at the 2018 Yegrin Musical Awards and the Best Female Artist title at the 2007 Mnet KM Music Festival.
The character of Roxie Hart is a central figure in the 1920s-set musical, which features a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The narrative follows a housewife and nightclub dancer who attempts to escape a murder conviction by hiring a skilled criminal lawyer to manipulate the media and public perception. The current Broadway cast also includes Sophie Carmen-Jones as Velma Kelly, Nik Walker as Billy Flynn, and Jacqueline B. Arnold as Matron “Mama” Morton.
The licensed production of Chicago has also maintained a long-standing presence in South Korea since its initial launch in 2000. According to producer Park Myung-Sung of the Korean production, the musical has been performed approximately 1,700 times and has drawn roughly 1.8 million audience members in the country.
The Broadway production is produced by Barry and Fran Weissler, with Alecia Parker serving as executive producer. The creative team includes direction by Walter Bobbie and choreography by Ann Reinking, both of whom earned Tony Awards for their work on the revival.
