The New York Botanical Garden is hosting its autumn programming in the Bronx, featuring seasonal foliage, horticulture displays, and educational opportunities. Highlights across the grounds include late-season blooms, ornamental grasses, and fall foliage in the Native Plant Garden, Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, and Thain Family Forest. The Flower Power exhibition remains on display through Oct. 18.
New to the garden this year is an inaugural Día de los Muertos celebration running from Oct. 3 through Nov. 2. The programming features an ofrenda display, marigold florals, artfully arranged calaveras and alebrijes, and weekend music performances. Hands-on workshops led by teaching artist Blanka Amezkua offer instruction in creating silk flowers and traditional papel picado banners.
Additional cultural events include Mexican folk dance performances by the MAZarte Dance Company on Oct. 31 and Nov. 2, as well as a procession of puppets featuring monarch butterfly designs on Oct. 24 and 25. On Nov. 1, a Día de los Muertos parade will feature giant puppets by Mascara Viva, music by Son Pecadores, and cumbia sonidera dance instruction led by CoolMarx with dancers Kacia and Cinthya.
The garden is also hosting Kiku: Spotlight on Tradition from Oct. 31 through Nov. 15 in the Bourke-Sullivan Display House. The display showcases traditional Japanese chrysanthemums trained over 11 months into sculpted forms, including the multi-flower ozukuri style. A dedicated Kiku Highlight Weekend on Nov. 7 and 8 will include live taiko drumming performances and crafts.
A series of continuing education classes begins this fall, covering subjects such as mushroom hunting, urban beekeeping, botanical watercolor painting, soil science, and bird observation. The weekly NYBG Farmers Market continues on Wednesdays through Oct. 21 at the Mosholu Entrance, while dining venues including the Pine Tree Café and Hudson Garden Grill remain open for visitors alongside the NYBG Shop.
