New York Botanical Garden to launch ‘Flower Power’ exhibition in May

New York Botanical Gardens launches in Flower Power in May 2026

The New York Botanical Garden will celebrate the 1960s and ’70s this summer with “Flower Power,” a multidisciplinary exhibition exploring flowers as cultural symbols of peace, love, and environmental activism.

Opening May 23 and running through Oct. 18, 2026, the garden-wide takeover will feature works by pop art icon Andy Warhol alongside monumental floral installations and psychedelic evening events.

“Flower Power unites world-class art with our living plant collections and our historic landmark buildings and landscape,” said Jennifer Bernstein, CEO and president of the New York Botanical Garden.

The exhibition’s indoor centerpiece, located in the Mertz Library Building’s art gallery, features Warhol’s “Flowers” (1964) displayed with the original source photograph by environmental activist Patricia Caulfield. The gallery also includes work by Milton Glaser and Joe Brainard, period fashion, and first editions of influential texts like Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring.”

Across the 250-acre grounds, visitors will encounter:

  • A 15-foot-diameter peace sign constructed from live plants.
  • Artist-designed “hippie buses” inspired by the 1969 Woodstock festival.
  • Monumental daisy-shaped sculptures by artist Amie Jacobsen inside the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory.
  • Large hand-painted fabric canopies and an interactive “art fence” where visitors can contribute to a collective textile work.

The garden will also host “Flower Power Nights” on select evenings starting May 30. These after-hours events will feature live music from bands such as Ghost Funk Orchestra and Habibi, accompanied by “Liquid Light Shows” — a psychedelic multimedia art form popularized in the 1960s.

Tickets for daytime viewing are currently on sale at nybg.org. Tickets for the evening series will be available starting April 16.
