The Union Square Partnership has unveiled its sixth annual street mural, a 7,500-square-foot installation titled “Get Outside” by artist Shantell Martin.
Located on the 14th Street Busway between Broadway and University Place, the large-scale piece is presented by the footwear brand Merrell in partnership with NYC DOT Art. The project, installed by Colossal Media with media placement by Talon, serves as the kickoff for “Merrell Outside in the City,” a global program aimed at redefining the outdoor experience in urban environments.
The mural features Martin’s signature spontaneous linework, utilizing a white-on-black color scheme with bursts of color and an orange thread that forms a path. The work is designed to encourage pedestrians to reconnect with themselves and the community through simple acts like walking and breathing.
“Union Square has long been a canvas for artists to display their work, creating new ways for people to experience our public spaces,” said Julie Stein, executive director of Union Square Partnership. “The 14th Street busway mural, an award-winning program now in its sixth year, has become a popular public art installation that New Yorkers look forward to year after year.”
The piece was hand-painted by Brooklyn-based Colossal Media. The installation reframes the outdoors as an element woven into daily city life rather than a distant destination.
“This work is about following that energy, encouraging people to walk, notice, and find their own path through the city,” Martin said.
Jen Edelberg, EVP of Growth at Colossal Media, noted that the project serves as a reminder that “’outside’ is everywhere and presence is always possible.”
The 14th Street Busway Mural program is an award-winning initiative intended to beautify the public realm and celebrate Union Square’s status as a central meeting point for residents and visitors.
