The Vangeline Theater and the New York Butoh Institute have announced the upcoming performance of Unforgotten: Butoh for 9/11 in Times Square. The public production is scheduled for September 11, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. The 60-minute ensemble presentation is completely free for the public to attend.
The commemorative work is choreographed by the company’s artistic director, Vangeline, to honor the victims of the September 11 attacks. The performance features a specific dedication to the firefighters, policemen, and women who lost their lives. An ensemble of several dancers will perform the piece, including Suyi Xu, Zo Roze, Dani Cole, Madelyn Sher, and Eilish Henderson.
Renowned cellist Katinka Kleijn will provide live musical accompaniment for the duration of the dance piece. Kleijn, a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the International Contemporary Ensemble, has built an expansive career crossing classical and collaborative performance boundaries. Her past work includes site-specific installations, orchestral recordings, and musical performances at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.
The upcoming event marks two decades of public 9/11 commemorative performances hosted by the Vangeline Theater in New York City. For the past ten years, the organization has specifically staged these annual offerings inside Times Square. The company utilizes Butoh, a meditative and expressive dance form, to establish a public space for collective mourning and remembrance at the landmark location.
The 2026 public program is made possible through financial backing from several municipal and national arts organizations. Funding is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts, with additional support from the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. The event is also supported by the New York Department of Cultural Affairs and the City Council.
