‘Killing an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe’ adds new performers for limited Merchant’s House run

Killing an Evening with. Edgar Allen Poe at the Merchant House in Manhattan.

Summoners Ensemble Theatre has announced new additions to its limited engagement of Killing an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe, bringing musician Natalia “Saw Lady” Paruz and psychic medium Heather Carlucci into the production’s atmospheric run at the Merchant’s House Museum this spring.

The 12-performance engagement will be presented March 25 through April 5 at the landmark 1832 Merchant’s House Museum (29 E 4th St, New York, NY 10003). The solo theatrical experience is performed by John Kevin Jones and directed by Rhonda Dodd, with tickets now on sale.

Paruz, known internationally for her performances on the musical saw, will appear before each performance, playing the haunting instrument for audiences prior to the show. She will also take part in four select pre-show receptions titled “Raise a Glass to Edgar,” which offer guests an additional immersive experience connected to Poe’s life and work.

Carlucci, an internationally known psychic medium and medical intuitive, will appear following both Sunday performances, offering in-person psychic readings for audience members to observe.

Killing an Evening with Edgar Allan Poe debuted in 2018 and returns to the Merchant’s House Museum for its fourth installment. The production brings Poe’s stories and poems to life in the museum’s candlelit double parlors, featuring works such as “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Angel of the Odd” and “The Raven.” The museum has been described by The New York Times as “Manhattan’s most haunted house.”

This year’s announcement coincides with the 181st anniversary of the first publication of “The Raven,” which appeared in the New York Evening Mirror on Jan. 29, 1845, and brought Poe national fame. Poe lived just blocks from the Merchant’s House at the time of the poem’s publication.

The optional “Raise a Glass to Edgar” receptions will be held prior to four performances and include a guided gathering in the museum’s 19th-century kitchen, refreshments, selections of Poe’s poetry performed by Jones, and musical accompaniment by Paruz. Attendance for the receptions is strictly limited.

Tickets range from $65 to $75, with seating limited to 40 guests per performance. Reception tickets are an additional $30 and are limited to 20 guests.
